Croydon Council gets £5.5m to build new homes

Published: 2009-09-15 11:56:45

A windfall from the Department of Communities and Local Government will help pay for 54 new homes across the borough.

Croydon was one of 47 councils across the country to receive a share of £127million funding to help build new homes.

Croydon Council pledged to match fund the award, meaning that more than £10 million will be spent on the housing projects.

Councillor Dudley Mead, the council's cabinet member for housing said: "I am always delighted when somebody wants to make an award to Croydon and we will make good use of it. It will provide more homes and help meet targets for housing."

The Department for Communities and Local Government said the money, along with plans to give councils greater control of their housing finances and waiting lists, means councils will be better placed to meet housing needs.

The nine schemes included in the housing bid are:

  • Ashburton, £505,000 - five homes
  • Fieldway £1,925,000 - 18 homes
  • West Thornton, £830,000 - eight homes
  • South Norwood, £835,000 - eight homes
  • Heathfield, £155,000 - two homes
  • New Addington, £1,211,000 - 13 homes

The fund is part of a £460 million bidding programme managed by the government’s Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and distributed in two rounds. It was made available through government in the April budget (£100 million) and was later increased by a further £360 million over three years as part of the Housing Pledge (in June).
