Best ever results for Croydon's schools

Published: 2009-09-18 10:57:26

The percentage of Croydon students gaining five good (A* - C) GCSEs overall has risen from 64% to 74% - far outreaching the national average increase of 1.4% and making 2009 the most successful year for the borough’s schools.

The increase also puts Croydon’s schools ahead of the national average attainment figure of 67.1%.

Importantly, 52% of pupils gained five or more good GCSEs including English and maths, up nearly 5% on last year and breaking all previous records. Councillor Tim Pollard, cabinet member for children, young people and learners said of the results: "These increases are a real testimony to the hard work and dedication of pupils and teachers at all of Croydon's schools."

With nearly all Croydon schools now meeting the Government’s minimum 30% threshold, the council is keen to raise standards further to meet Croydon’s long term target of 40% of pupils in every school achieving five good GCSEs, including English and maths.

Councillor Pollard added: "We are focused on making further improvements through our Transforming Croydon Schools programme to meet our long term target and offer all Croydon’s young people the opportunity to fulfil their academic potential."
