Transport bonus for Purley

Published: 2009-09-23 15:38:25

Purley town centre is to receive £2.25 million worth of Croydon Council's £3.8 million Local Implementation Plan (LIP) funding for transport and highway projects.

Though the town was disappointed to miss out on funding to reorganise the gyratory system, it will now still be able to look forward to improved transport infrastructure.

Bureaucratic regulations regarding how LIP funding be spent have been eased and it means Croydon Council is free to allocate the money to the places most in need.

The remaining £1.6 million will be spent on a range of other schemes to improve travel in and around the borough, and £150,000 has been set aside to start preparing the way for Addiscombe to receive the same treatment as Purley.

Councillor Jason Perry, the council’s cabinet member for planning and consultation said:  “We’re standing by our commitment to make a big investment in Purley and will be devoting the bulk of next year’s funding for traffic, transport and road safety in the borough to significantly improve conditions in the town.

“The greater flexibility over how we spend this money means we can concentrate resources in a single area and make a really big impact.  Hopefully we can adopt the same kind of approach to other parts of the borough in future and Addiscombe is very much in mind as the next place for this form of treatment.”
