Council outlines older people housing vision

Published: 2009-03-19 15:27:47

A recent report to Cabinet sets out how good-quality housing and housing services will play a central role in helping Croydon's residents to live full and independent lives throughout their old age. The strategy will help create more provision, greater choice and improved information for older people, enabling them to stay in their own homes for longer.

Councillor Dudley Mead, deputy leader and cabinet member for housing, said: “Our plans within this new strategy offer an opportunity for better quality housing for all Croydon's older residents, helping them to live full and independent lives and contribute to their communities and family life for as long as possible."

Its five main aims are:

  • helping people to live as independently as possible; either remaining in their own homes or moving to a more suitable home of their own
  • providing support to those who need it, regardless of where they live
  • giving people choice over where they live through different models of housing
  • ensuring that choices can be made at the right stage in someone's life through the provision of timely and comprehensive advice
  • managing the affordable housing stock efficiently and making best use of resources.

In order to achieve these aims the council's priorities include:

  • providing flexible support services
  • building high-quality homes including retirement housing schemes
  • opening up facilities in retirement schemes to the wider community
  • providing a range of 'staying put' services and home adaptations.
