The final countdown

Wellesley Road Entries

Published: 2009-06-03 17:42:42

Okra Landscape Architects and a team led by James Corner Field Operations have been short-listed in the international competition to redesign Wellesley Road, in Croydon town centre. The winner will be announced in July.

There were 50 entries, from the UK, Europe and North America. They were judged on four main criteria: design flair, taking a sympathetic approach to the local area, addressing key issues from the brief, and how successfully the ideas were conveyed to the panel.

After the announcement, chairman of the judging panel councillor Steve O'Connell said: "These two choices were the most appreciated by all of the assessors. They were very well elaborated in terms of both urban design and the strategies put forward to make them into a reality.

"These two designers have lived up to their professional credentials and, most importantly, paid close attention to Croydon's local context."

More information about the competition can be found at www.croydonthirdcity.co.uk and in the next issue of City3 magazine.
