BSF jobs to extend beyond schools

Published: 2009-12-03 12:24:14

The 12 newly released Building Schools for the Future projects could lead to a broad sweep of work for successful contractors, according to Partnerships for Schools chief executive Tim Byles. (Sourced from Construction News.)

He said that the councils were likely to use firms to push through related projects as well as BFS jobs.

PfS is now responsible for all schools capital spending. The Government this week approved a further £1 billion of funding that will allow 12 councils to put BSF projects to market. Brent, Darlington, Devon, Havering, Kingston and Croydon, Norfolk, Plymouth, Sefton, Wakefield and Warrington councils are set to put out OJEU notices in the first three months of next year.

Lancashire and Tameside will move on to fresh waves of their existing schemes under the £55bn programme to rebuild or refurbish every state secondary school in England.

Mr Byles said: "There is an obvious opportunity. The OJEU notices being issued for BSF tend to be much broader these days, and a number of councils are thinking about wider regeneration and collocation projects.

"I think each project represents an excellent opportunity for contractors to extend their reach in areas according to the strategies of local authorities."
