Croydon bid to transform schools included in government programme

Published: 2009-03-26 13:34:14

Croydon council has entered into negotiations with Partnership for Schools (PfS), the body responsible for delivering Building Schools for the Future projects across the country, over when the programme of building works to be funded by BSF can begin.

The programme will involve the refurbishment or rebuilding of every secondary school in Croydon over the coming years. Councillor Tim Pollard, cabinet member for children's services and adult learning, said: "We are pleased that the government has included Croydon in the BSF programme. Our plans constitute one of the largest and most ambitious education projects ever seen in the UK and will transform the standard of education in the borough, acting as a shining example to other local authorities across the country. Now it's a case of agreeing a timetable with government so that we can begin to put detailed plans in place for improving facilities at our schools.”

Once PfS has clarified the process, the council will produce a timetable for building works at individual schools. "The new buildings and facilities will improve the learning environment for teaching and learning in all of Croydon's schools,” Pollard added. “This programme of investment will ensure that parents have the opportunity to send their children to local schools with outstanding facilities and standards of teaching. It's exciting times for the people of Croydon with the Secretary of State for Education approving our plans to create two academies at Ashburton and Haling Manor."
