Croydon plans buoyed by Tory victory

Plans for a £450 million regeneration project in the London Borough of Croydon, that includes a new council headquarters, looks set to go-ahead after a Conservative victory in the general election. (Sourced from LocalGov.co.uk.)
 
Former Tory councillor Gavin Barwell won the Croydon Central seat in a fierce battle against his ex-colleague and incumbent MP Andrew Pelling - who was standing as an independent - and Labour's Gerry Ryan.

Labour campaigned against the regeneration proposals as did Mr Pelling - vowing to scrap the ‘Tory luxury council HQ’, and citing that the current Taberner House council office has recently undergone a £12 million refurbishment.

The complex finances of the project, which involves construction firm John Laing as a development partner, were particularly criticised by Pelling, saying it was ‘hugely risky’.
