Helping jobseekers get off the shelf

Published: 2010-07-06 13:31:03

A new retail recruitment centre is helping jobseekers in Croydon back into positions suitable for their skill sets.

Jobskills Retail is a partnership between Croydon College and Jobcentre Plus, and is being funded by £230,000 from Croydon Economic Development Company and the council.

Mark Maddison, employabili ty manager for Croydon College, said surveys conducted by the college showed that 15,000 people were employed in the retail sector in Croydon and it was felt setting up the centre would benefit both potential employees and employers by easing the recruitment process.

He said the college aimed to improve the skills of people looking for work through a range of training courses.

"These cover soft skills like preparing for interviews and making the right impression, through to customer service skills."
