London Mayor Boris Johnson has given Croydon £25,000 to become a more bike-friendly borough.

The funding is being welcomed by the council, which has highlighted cycling as an area for improvement in its new draft transport strategy. read more

BSF jobs to extend beyond schools

The 12 newly released Building Schools for the Future projects could lead to a broad sweep of work for successful contractors, according to Partnerships for Schools chief executive Tim Byles. (Sourced from Construction News.)
 
He said that the councils were likely to use firms to push through related projects as well as BFS jobs.
 
PfS is now responsible for all schools capital spending. The Government this week approved a further £1 billion of funding that will allow 12 councils to put BSF projects to market. Brent, Darlington, Devon, Havering, Kingston and Croydon, Norfolk, Plymouth, Sefton, Wakefield and Warrington councils are set to put out OJEU notices in the first three months of next year. read more

Ronnie Corbett's old home on the market

Fairways, the beautiful chateaustyle house near Croydon that was home to Ronnie Corbett for 35 years, has come on the market for £2.7million. (Sourced from the Daily Mail.)
 
The seven-bedroom property is surrounded by more than an acre of land and backs on to Addington golf course, which might explain why Corbett lived there for so long. The comedian still lives nearby and can often be seen playing at the course. read more

Croydon leads way with pioneering new housing pilot

A new pilot scheme - approved by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) London Board, chaired by the Mayor - has been set up to explore what immediate steps can be taken to give London's councils greater control and flexibility over housing decisions. read more
